You know I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. It’s awesome. I’ve watched Social Network about 20 times. I love it.
I think it’s great being able to keep up with friends and classmates. It’s amusing to follow trainwrecks that you just can’t bring yourself to unfriend.
But I always have issues with how public Facebook is. Sounds silly for a girl with a blog, right? It seems like there’s always some new change that is putting privacy at risk. I get it, Facebook is free. You get what you pay for.
But sometimes you never bargained for what you get.
That happened to my sweet friend Dana. She wrote about her experience. If you don’t have time to read it all HERE on her blog, basically she started getting people “subscribing” to her Facebook updates, but she doesn’t have a public page. She started getting lewd emails and people calling her. Come to find out, someone had taken a screenshot of her Facebook profile and linked it to nude pictures (not her) on a website that posts crap.
Please, please be careful about your Facebook settings. Lock it down. Make sure that you have it to the highest level. Untag any photos that you’re in (I did that today).
You just never know.

Thank you so much Jess for reposting… Most of the response I’ve received has been so supportive and helpful, and I am blessed and grateful to know such wonderful people like you and don’t quite feel worthy of the following. But tonight I was reminded as well, that not everyone agrees or supports my decision to talk about it, and although I’m OK with the difference of opinions, it’s equally hurtful when people tell me I should give up my business and that I’m putting other people in danger with my story, including my family. Wow. I wish people would be more careful with their words… I refuse to let what happened to me stop my life. It will not beat me. I will fight. I will live. Cautiously. *Love to you and those little bitty ones…xoxo* D
It is beyond me why people would think that you should NOT be talking about something so important. You keep on kicking butt and taking names Dana. I’m behind you!
Dana, I posted a comment to your blog, but I will post here also becuase you responded to Jess’ post.
It’s time to sue. If Hunter Moore will not respond to a polite letter, then he will respond to the sheriff seizing funds from his bank account. Hunter Moore has misappropriated your images; he has also interfered with your right to publicity. You are entitled to money damages. Hunter Moore has the funds to pay; he is worth pursuing. You can subpoena the name and address of the anonymous poster, if you are interested. I am happy to help you but I am not licensed to practice law in your jurisdiction (Texas). I am a Pennsylvania lawyer. You should talk to a lawyer in your state immediately. Run, don’t walk, to your lawyer’s office. Stop being nice; money awards teach lessons.
Good luck.
Such great advice.
Oh. My….
I always have said that FB is the devil.
It totally is. Facebook is just crazy town. And yet I can’t quit.
What happened to your friend is truly, truly evil . . . I have a friend who saw her own pic when browsing to a porn site.
I got pretty frantic calls about who to go to in order to get it taken down.
Yikes. It’s just terrifying, but what is also scary is what’s out there that is not even discovered.
It sucks that people do things like that. I made it so people can’t subscribe to my FB page. I don’t need that.
It’s just crazy. And scary.
Scary story! I am hopping over to double check my FB security settings right now!
It’s terrifying. I constantly check my settings. Such a sad world with such horrible people.
